Margaret O'Brien

"Three Wise Fools"

(MGM - 1946)

Born in Los Angeles, this charming MGM child star of 40s films, made her screen debut at age four  with one line of dialogue, in "Babes of Broadway." She later appeared as Judy Garland's sister Tootie, in "Meet Me in St. Louis." In 1944, she received a special academy award as "Outstanding Child Actress." But like other child stars, she failed to graduate into adolescent roles and, in 1951, she retired from the screen. Years later, she returned to the screen in a handful of scattered films. She continues to remain active on TV and the dinner-theatre circuit.

The pink dress on display was worn by Ms. O'Brien in the film "Three Wise Fools," which starred Lionel Barrymore, Lewis Stone and Edward Arnold. She was only nine years old when she starred in this picture in 1946. On August 15, 1946, she wore this pink dress for the last time, to the world famous Graumans' Chinese Theatre, to place her hand and footprints in cement. She was accompanied by her mother for this special ceremony.
