The film was written by William Rose, who also scripted It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World – among other great films – and Flim-Flam Man retains a lot of the slapstick-action featured in that other film, complete with a daring car chase. In the director’s chair is Irvin Kershner, who you probably know from a little tiny film called The Empire Strikes Back. Yeah, so, lots of talent involved here.

Besides having one of the greatest theme songs of all-time (written by an uncredited Burt Bacharach, his first film), and being the first star-vehicle for future icon Steve McQueen, The Blob is an undisputed classic, and the very definition of 1950s Camp Sci-Fi. Do you even need to hear a plot description? Asteroid crashes with blob inside, blob eats everyone it can, growing bigger all the while, until local teens and law enforcement find a way to thwart its alien ways. That’s pretty much it, and pretty much all you need.

Marvel at the range of practical effects that bring this gelatinous fiend to life! Guffaw at the good-natured relations between cops and kids! And allow yourself to be astounded by the overly-simplistic resolution! Yes, The Blob has something for everyone; even young children (6 or 7 years old +) can enjoy this one, as there are no overt scares, most of the attacks are off-screen and show nothing more graphic than a jiggling bowful of jelly, and there’s even a young protagonist who ends up with a new puppy at the end. Seriously, the most PG thing that happens in this one is the kids sneaking out after bedtime.

The Blob got a sequel, Beware the Blob, in 1972 (directed by and starring Larry “J.R.” Hagman), and a grittier remake in 1988, but the original is still the best. It’s available on DVD and Blu-Ray, and can be found in our Classic Sci-Fi section in the back room.
